I need some advice as I really need a new roof for an older home built in 1949. I've thought about a metal roof, but don't know the process or how to find a reputable company in my area, versus a shingled roof. Any info. would be welcome.

I will never put anything but metal on a roof again. It is definitely the best investment, lots of color choices, it should last for years and your insurance company should give you a break on your rates as well. Check local code but propanel can go right over a single layer of shingles. The metal supplier will measure and cut lenghth, but you will have to cut out for vents and angles at the valley. Calls for some patience and moderate skill level.

Metal roofs are dangerous, if your house ever catches fire. The heat will be much more intense and would be much more likely to trap anyone in the house at the time. Also, the chances of saving any part of the home was the fire started, would be severely limited.

If you live in an area where there are a lot of Amish people, there will undoubtedly be a roofing company run by them. They are very efficient workers and got my very large metal roof done in one day, stripping off all the old shingles down to the wood. That was about 6 years ago and we have had no problems with it at all. The downside is that if you need to get on the roof for any reason, it is slick. The best part is that it is permanent and you won't ever need to replace it like you will with shingles in a few years.

I SERIOUSLY question the advice of Pg. I have researched this quite thoroughly and would like to see the basis for his/her statements. What I did find was Metal costs 2 to 3 times more than asphalt, but lasts up to twice as long. Embers from a forest fire will not ignite a metal roof, but likely would an asphalt. We have had 2 hail storms damage our shingles, to the extent of requiring the entire roof to be replaced---twice. Metal would have been un affected.
