I stuffed newspaper tightly in the hole between the house hardboard and siding then used white caulk to seal the hole and form a moisture proof plug. It was a small hole from a weed wacker so it has worked well. You don't see it from a distance.
Oh, dear I fretted over this problem for months after my neighbor went crazy with his weed wacker and left about twenty good size holes in my siding. 'I didn't do it'. Right! Anyway, I finally solved the problem without spending any money and not much effort by throwing pebbles and small rocks randomly against the base of the siding and stuffing the worst of the holes with some of the pebbles and rocks. Looks great.
