DIY Bathtub Recoat

After a bathtub remodel the tub was looking pretty rough. I wish I had done a better job protecting it. So I spotted a DIY resurfacing product for $50ish at Lowes and decided I would give it a shot before replacing!

BEFORE… yikes I know! Let this be your PSA to protect your tub during a renovation!

Here’s the product I bought. It had good reviews so I was hopeful!

Per the instructions I used the steel wool and included cleaner to scrub my porcelain tub. Then for good measure I used a coarse sandpaper to get any remaining stuck-on material. I was surprised that the tub didn’t scratch and had never looked cleaner!

Next, I over-prepped and I’m glad I did because there was a good amount of overspray. I covered EVERYTHING in the bathroom with plastic.

Next, I put on a mask and hood to protect myself and shook the can very well.

Finally, spraying! I did lots of light coats waiting 10 minutes in between each one.

This n95 mask still wasn't enough. I highly recommend a respirator because the fumes were strong! I ended up getting 6 coats out of the 2 cans that the kit came with.

And after!! The cure time is 48 hours but I gave it a few extra days. I’ll keep you posted on how it holds up!

Would running the exhaust fan and opening my window help or would they effect the drying?

Looks like new. Homax and Rustoleum make great products for this. Yes. the fumes are horrible. Good tutorial. Proper prep is the key. I heard it can last 10+ years. Great job and great share.
