A couple of things I learned from my own experience. Drainage stones should lay in the pit first. The other things I learned is to cover your pipe with landscapers cloth to prevent the dirt and mud from falling into the pipe and clogging it. The most interesting thing I learned is to put the holes of the pipe face DOWN. As the water drains over the rocks and gets higher, the water will enter the pipe holes and it lessens the chance of clogging the pipe and redigging it all over again. Preparation is the key. Make sure that if you are digging a French Drain, that the hole is deep enough and you have plenty of stone to fill it with.

I recall seeing a TV fix-it show where the host showed a type of drainage pipe that came already wrapped with a filter cloth to keep dirt out.

I'm not in the country, I'm in the city and need to connect to pre-existing drains from tbe rain gutters running to the street. I can't use a catch-basin. It would only relocate the backup at the sidewalk. I need to know how to connect the perforated pipe to the white pvc pipe alteady running from downspouts the street.

Okay, imagine the bottom of the pipe, where the hole is, is 12 inches down. We don't care about water that is only 6 inches down. But when it get 12 inches and more, when it starts to saturate the earth and build up around the pipe, that is when we need to get rid of it. So it starts to seep into the hole in the pipe, but the dirt and rocks around it do not enter the hole.

Also fabric wears out, so I like this idea better.
