Can a DIYer Install a whole house water filter

We have a well and a softener, but we need a filter installed between the pump and the softener to get rid of rusty water. The water is potable, just not pretty.

Great idea! It won't remove rusty water but will catch anything solid. This is a rather simple plumbing project but don't be afraid to call a plumber if you don't have the skills or tools.
You should be able to do it yourself if you have clear directions that you follow. You can also get Culligan or even a home improvement store to install them for you.

Installing a single cartridge whole house water filter is easy. All you need is a horizontal run of water pipe a foot or more along a wall between the expansion tank for your well and the water softener. You cut out a section of the pipe to fit the filter and install with the fittings they supply. You should attach it to the wall but I have installed one vertically in copper pipe that provided enough support for the weight of the filter. These are sold at any hardware store and the manufacturer will supply instructions for installing their filter. No electrical connections and you can find them for less than $30.
