The knobs on the washing machine do not work properly, sometimes it takes about five minutes to start it. The toilet just makes a noise (like water escaping) when no one is using it

Unfortunately nothing lasts forever. The switches are not that simple. Todays are not just mechanical in design that you will see when the cover is removed. The cost of fixing it outweighs the cost of replacing it. Even if you sink money into the repair something else could go wrong at anytime.

For your washing machine, get the model number and name off the washer and look up online to reorder the parts. For the toilet, sounds like you need a new float. They are pretty cheap to replace and easy too. You can get them at Lowes or Home Depot or other box store.

You can do both of these repairs yourself. It sounds like the gears under your washing machine knobs are worn so the knobs don't engage with them. I'd try to pry the knobs off and take a look. If that's what is wrong check youtube for some help. The toilet is also easy. Take the lid off the back and check the float to see if the arm is bent too far down. If you can lift it up and the water stops running, that's the problem. Bend up the arm gently until the water stops. If that doesn't work check the float which is the big plastic bulb on the end of the arm. It may have developed a crack in the seam which allows water to get into it so that it won't come up and turn off the flow of the incoming water. If this doesn't work you may have to replace the flap in the bottom of the tank that lifts up to allow the water to flow into the toilet. None of these parts are being made any more however. Now you have to buy a kit that doesn't use the old float system. These cost about $15 anywhere except from a plumber! BUT before you buy anything I'd turn the water turn-off valve under the back of your toilet down by the wall to the right about a quarter of a turn to restrict the flow of water a little bit. The Family Handyman magazine and website says to do this if your toilet is loud during the refill cycle. Best of luck. (I had a plumber in recently and I could have had a brand new toilet and put it in for less than he charged. He kept racking up the cost.) If you go through all of these steps and it still sounds the same there is one more thing you can do (no dynamite!) which is to replace the seal under the rubber flap in the bottom of the tank. That was what was wrong with mine but I'd never heard of that so I called the plumber. Even he didn't think of that and had to keep coming back. I think he probably knew but wanted to pad the bill. And he was an old family friend and master plumber in business for himself. Now I know how he can afford that huge house he built!. Believe me, I've been fixing things around my house for years and you can do it!!
