Use a plumber?

I am buying a new house. There is gas to the house already (furnace & hot water heater) and I want to put in a gas range in the kitchen. Use a plumber to run the line or who? I've heard plumber but don't know for sure. Don't want to schedule one if not correct. Thanks for your help.

  • Yes a plumber. If the house is still under construction, ask the builder to do it for you. If required, pull the proper permits first.

Sure. When you schedule the plumber tell them what you want done. Gas lines are one thing I consider not to be a DIY project.

Also check your local gas company they may cost less then a plumber. You can call around to places that sell gas fireplaces and see if they would do it or whom they suggest.

Agree! A plumber. I have done it many times, but I know what I'm doing. Never had to pull a permit but always good to check. Most gas companies can do it and add the cost to your bill. They may even prorate it so you don't get sticker shock. Wouldn't use a fireplace place. They themselves hire a plumber or have them on call.

Good to know for different areas that fireplace places use plumbers. In our area the fireplace place actually do the installations them self and for less.

Thanks for the advice. I will check with the gas company. They may want to inspect. Doesn't bother me for them to inspect. (older home...approx 40 years.) Just want to be safe and a handyman was not on my list if assurance.

some plumbers are certified to run gas lines -- some are not - -will depend on your state/County codes -- ask first --

Gas installations should be done by a professional gas installer only. Too dangerous to play around with. You need someone with the expertise to do the job properly and safely.
