We need an attic fan cover that doesn't leak air - hot or cold.

Our louvered cover opens when the fan is on and closes when the fan is off, but it leaks air. Hot in summer and cold in winter. Any suggestions on something we can use that keeps the fan functional, but stops the problem?

Hi. What about get some foamboard at the dollar tree, or dollar store. Put wallpaper,,contact paper, paint it the same color as your ceiling? (But that's no fun) Lol A good double sidded tape or Velcro on all sides. But Remember to stick it to the fan frame, so you don't have a bigger problem with the celling when you take it down. Good Luck..Gigi

If it leaks from the individual louvers check and see if the louvers have foam taped to them. If not, install new stick on, very thin (1/8" or less) soft foam tape on each louver. Otherwise, seal with foam or caulk where possible.

My contractor took vent cover off. Cut pink insulation (Home Depot or Lowe’s) to fit and put vent cover back in place. Just need to remove the insulation in season when you’ll be using the fan.

We had the same thing happening . We took board insulation with the silver backing on it cut it to the size of each side of the fan . Top bottom side so Length with and height . Then make a front the whole size of the fan .Put it together forming a box with Hot glue and duct tape.Cover the fan inside the attic from above so it sits on top .

If your fan is in the side of the house like ours is just turn the cover sideways and put nails in the frame sticking out put a bungee cord from side to side holding the box to the wall of the house. .

We also made one for the inside of the attic to cover the louvers as our fan is in the side of the house and our louvers are in the ceiling.. It does hold a lot of cold air out . We even made a box for the top of the fold up attic stairs to cover them do more draft coming from the pull down steps.Just build the box the size of the frame sliding it over your head to cover the steps when you leave the attic and fold up the steps. The insulation board is very light and about an inch thick. I think you will be surprised how much heat this saves over the winter.

Be sure and Unplug the fan ! Or be sure and shut the circlet breaker for that switch !You don’t want anyone to turn on the fan with it cover on .Big Safety tip DO that first thing .
