Help! I have a Wobbly toilet!

Oh no! More often than not, the wobble is caused by loose toilet bolts, but the flange may also be responsible. It may be corroded, broken or set too high- best of luck!

Toilets rock because they are not resting flush against the floor and are raised slightly in the center because they rest on a toilet flange that is slightly higher than the surrounding floor.

Your loose toilet troubles are related to the way your flooring was installed. This has happened since you had your bathroom floor redone, and the level or height of the floor changed. The shims you installed on the toilet to raise it up are not a solid install and can easily lead to a toilet that moves when you sit down over a short time.

You can check the height of your toilet flange by laying a board on the flange and see if there is a gap between it and the floor. It should be level with the floor or about 1/8" to 1/4" below the floor. If it is higher than the floor you will need to replace it with a new flange.

You may have to carve out some of the tile or other flooring around the edge of the drain hole so that you can place a new flange down into the hole since the old flange may have been positioned higher for the old floor.

Had flange inspected, bolts are new. Am at a loss. Thanks Hillel

Okay then my guess is that the bolts are not in the right position.

Remove the caps, back the nuts off almost to the end of bolts. hold each side of toilet up and make sure the head of each bolt is slid into the slot all of the way. When they are in slots all the way tighten nus surely and replay caps.

When you added the tile, did you remember to get an extended wax ring. You didn't say if the original flooring was tile and if you go from linoleum to tile, especially something much thicker, you have to get the extended wax ring to eliminate the wobble. Also, be sure that all bolts are tightened. Sounds obvious, but i've seen it happen.
