How to seal rough sawn timber?

    For what? In general you can use shellac.

    Hi! Any clear drying sealer should work. Work it in well with a brush. Use an exterior sealer if it is for outside.

    For inside use....use a foam roller to apply polyurethane and use a 3" to 4" paint brush to smooth it out. For outdoor.... use Helmsman Spar Urethane or varnish.

    I would use a spray matte sealer. You don't want anything shiny on rough hewn wood. Matte finish would be best.
