How do I stop sweaters from unraveling when I cut them?

I’ve been watching a lot and reading tutorials on how to make over old sweaters by cutting and sewing different fabrics and lace to them but how do you stop the knit from unraveling

You will need to re-hem the cut edge to keep it from unraveling.
Thank you. Can you just see across the cut end or do you actually need to fold it under and make a hem. Because that would seem to make it bulky
