How do I repaint a steel door?

I have a steel door that has chipped paint that is exposing the steel. How do I repaint without the chips being so obvious?

I just painted my steel doors. I cleaned them really well, then primed with Kilz. I used Behr semi-gloss with a 4 inch roller and a brush. Doors came out great.

Clean off any dirt or oily fingerprints. Wire brush the rusty parts as good as you can to take off rust and flaky paint, then spray with the oil based "Kilz" brand primer, be generous with the Kilz especially on the bottom half of the door where it gets the most rain, I usually use the whole can of primer. When this is cured according to the can's direction, spray with your desired color using at least two coats, more on bottom half of door. This will last several years, then can be repeated.

Hi Ladynred. I'm Cindy. Start by sanding the door to remove the all the paint chips. Next comes the paint. Rustoleum makes a paint exactly for metal doors. Read the label on the can to see if it has primer in it. Some do and some don't. Last step is to seal it. Again, some paints have sealer in them and some don't. There's a new paint on the market called Beyond Paint. It comes with a hefty price but it does not require sanding or sealing. Good luck Ladynred. Hope all is well with you.

Pressure wash, if you don't have one get an attachment for your garden hose that makes it high pressure. That will knock a lot of loose paint up and scrape away any that is loosened. Use a sanding block to smooth the surface. Then you are ready to clean and paint. You might want to re prime.
