How about sanding down smoothly the rough areas and repaint? You can get sand paper from the Dollar Tree for a dollar and if you have a recycling facility near you, they let you go into the paint room and look at paints and it's free. Maybe someone you know can donate these items if they have them lying around and no longer need.

I would scrape it down anywhere it's chipping, then sand lightly with fine grit sandpaper, wipe completely to remove any dust, and paint it. Be careful with old paint on the door in case of asbestos though. Good Luck!

Sand it with sandpaper starting with a rough grit and working your way to a fine grit. Use a sponge under the sandpaper so you don't damage the trim profile any more. Then use wood putty to fill in missing chunks. It will probably take several coats of putty. Prime, paint.

Sanding and some wood filler would do wonders for this door. A small container of wood filler is less than $5. Fill the deepest gouges and then sand the damaged area. New paint will have it looking like new.

  • This is a common problem for dogs. I have one that gets real bad from fireworks. So I stay home for New Year's Eve and from mid June through 4th of July here in the states. Since your dog did so much damage, talk to your vet. They can prescribe a mild sedative to calm them down. What I do is hop into bed with all the pets (3-6 dogs, 6 cats, canary cage and dragon cage) and turn on the heat or ac, put on a fan, close all the windows and put the TV on much louder than normal. I have water bowls and pet treats to distract them if necessary. And snuggle with the one that has difficulty. I have on occasion used the sedative if the prior actions did not help.

The door looks like it is really fixable, most of it just looks like he scratched off the paint. Use wood filler to fix any damaged areas, sand it smooth and level, sand the existing paint and definitely feather the parts where the layers are exposed so that they won't be noticeable. Clean it up good and let it dry before you prime the door. When you prime, you should be able to tell if any edges will show through the paint and you can fix and prime that area before you paint. You can do this!

If you can remove the door to treat it with a brush on paint remover that might work best for starters. Be sure to wear a mask and glasses so you don't get the remover in your lungs or in your eyes. Then sanding as mentioned in the previous answers. Depending on how the door looks after this, you might want to consider staining the wood rather than painting. That way if it happens again (dog scratches) you may be able to just retouch with the same stain.

I would try wood filler. Fill, sand, paint.

    You're welcome 😄

Dollar Tree also hole filler. I had to use it before for something similar to your situation and I just piled it in the gash and wiped away the excess and sanded. Hopefully you find something to work for you. Good luck!
