I need ideas on how to get it to stay in place. I don't want to nail into the door (I leave in a rental). In the 2nd photo you can see where there's gaps away from the door.

You could try command strips, they will peel right off without leaving anything behind when you are done with them.

Try a hot glue gun, easy to remove.

That might work. On the back of rods is a thin medal strip I might be able to glue to stick to it.

Have you tried using any duct tape?? There's a lot of pretty colored and designed ones out there you could use to make it look really nice!! It's very strong and can be removed later.

Afraid the duct tape will take paint off the door and make it a sticky mess.

In college i lived in a dorm built with cinder blocks. We hung things up with poster tack. It doesn't remove the paint from surfaces and if you form it right it cannot be seen. It gets soft and adheres well to the surface you are working with. It is in the office supply section of most walmart or target stores

I bought two pieces of flat bar metal and wrapped it from the bottom of the vertical pieces to the underside of the door. I screwed it to the top and bottom of the door where it's hidden by the door frame. That meant taking the door down to get it properly positioned and secure. It no longer rattles or slides when the door is opened. Where the vertical pieces wanted to bow outward, I gave them a slight bend in the other direction. Leverage at work. (I probably had too much weight in one of the baskets and warped it out of true and level).

The over the door triple towel bar in the bathroom used to bind at the top of the door. The door fit too tightly to the frame. I used a file (rasp) to create just enough of a channel for the part that wraps over the top of the door to sit in, and it not only isn't visible, it doesn't creep across the door any more.

Thats one problem with bi-fold doors, barn doors and pocket or sliding doors...you can't use over the door storage items.
