Wow, bummer. So why don't you replace the deadbolt?

Maybe try lubricating it with lock-ease or wd-40

Get some graphite and blow it into the keyhole. Like with a turkey baster or one of those rubber bulbs you use to wash out your ears. That should help the gearing inside move smoothly.

It has something jambing it. Remove the screws on the inside of the lock (some have pry off plates covering the mechanics). Remove the lock plate from the edge of the door. Then completely remove the lock. You should be able to determine if something is preventing it from opening. Possibly the spring is bad. If that is the case, just by a new deadbolt and put it in the same hole.

From what I read, shooting some dry teflon lube in the lock should unstick it. Othwise, you can just replace it, here are some tutorials on how to do that https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=replace+deadbolt

Does the deadbolt operate properly if you try it with the door open? If so, then it is mechanically binding in the framing receiver. The house or door frame may has settled in 7 years. The opening may not be aligned properly and some deadbolts allow for some adjustment. Otherwise check to see where it is binding and file away some of the metal until it operates smoothly. I used to have a problem where the door handle had to be pulled while operating the deadbolt key. Pulling door released pressure on the bolt.

I would spray some WD-40 in there and see if that helps. If not, here is an article that may be helpful - https://diy.stackexchange.com/questions/25382/why-wont-my-deadbolt-unlock-and-how-can-i-fix-it

Thank ya'll for the replies and ideas. The bolt is not retracting fully into the door itself -- tried "picking" it from the inside -- . Tried spraying some lube in there; removed the hinge pins and levered the door -- won't come out of the frame. I'll try the dismantling ideas --after breakfast -- haha. Thanks again -- I'll post how it went. Take care.
