I would sponge paint it. It will look quite unique with a few different colours.

Do you prefer stain or paint?

WOW! A lot of damage. The veneer is just peeling off. I would replace it. Not work trying to repair/patch the veneer. Use the door to make something out of it.

Yeah, replacing isn't an option right now. I think I would prefer painting because I am more familiar with it. Hmm... sponge painting would use a few tones, right? That might hide the missing veneer. Thanks, all!

It is a standard builder grade luan door. Can be picked up in salvage, habitat for humanity or construction site for 5-10 bucks. Or just replace with new. If need be, staple some fabric on it.

You could use it for a multi media project with some sculpting clay and modeling paste. Some odd bits here and there. Check the internet for multi media projects. Many talented people. With their help you could get your creative juices going. Have fun and make it a project not a chore.

Replacing not an option? Then sand the edges of the remaining veneer feathering them out to the areas the veneer came off. Try to get a smooth transition. Then you can paint. Make sure you prime with a stain blocking primer.

I just redid a door much like this on our community office. I filled in the missing veneer with filler and sanded it smooth. Then primed and painted. The bottom was too bad to fill so I put a kick board there. These can be purchased at most home goods stores for about $25. I once owed a house with a large custom door that would have been far too expensive to replace and I upholstered it with a leather type fabric. I used decorative nail heads around the edge. You may have to make a slight adjustment to the door stop to accommodate the nail heads. I lived there for 8 years and the door was still beautiful!

the veneer needed to repair it would cost more than a new door...

leveling the damage out with wood filler, sanding, priming, and painting would be ideal.

leveling it with the harder sort of spackle and then painting it to your liking would be less durable, but also less hassle and sanding.

after spending a lot of time, filling, sanding, priming, painting... it is much easier to just get a new door. hollow core doors are pretty cheap. if you are going to spend 25 or more on supplies, might as well, spend a bit more and get the door.

and yes, you can get them at salvage stores for just a few bucks if you don't want to get a new new one.

Peel the rest of the veneer off, staple peg board or bead board on it, frame it with inexpensive wood.

I like Lorraine's suggestion......bead board! I think it would be awesome, a conversation piece, and durable. Do you have a local Habitat store that sells doors? That could be an option for you as well. Never know what you can find for a reasonable price. The old door could be used as a shelf or desktop over two cabinets. Best of luck.
