I have dark wood steps that need a runner for the grandchild. But don’t want to ruin the wood or spend a fortune . The runners I’ve seen In my $$ range are ugly . Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Instead of a complete runner could you use small carpet squares on each stair? You could hold them down with just 4 nails - one in each of the corners.

Make sure your runner is soft/padded, in the event your grandchild should fall.
Do they have "runner on a roll" at your local Lowes or Home Depot? That might be a solution for you as well.
I was thinking about carpet squares for when they come over too. Not the prettiest but they can come up when they leave. Something like this:

Hello Gigi,
You could use Rubber Stair Mats for each step. Hope that helps!

Hello. We have always use custom installed carpeting as a runner that matches the rest of the home. I’ve researched the metal rod and hook method for putting runners down and they are very expensive as they are required for each individual tread. I’m not sure there’s an inexpensive solution.
Please be sure if you do a DIY—be sure its a safe one.
Something like this work. Here’s a link.

Check a catalog called Improvements. They have some great carpet stair treads that are reasonable. You can use small tacks with larger heads on to keep them in place and do minimal damage to the wood.
You can buy carpet runner by the feet at homedepot.
I have found many options of runners at our local Walmart, plus inexpensive.
