How can I resize and bind an area rug?
I have a large modern rug I want to use in a smaller room. I need to cut it into a circle and rebind it. How would I do this? I especially need to know what tool would be best to cut the rug. Then, what materials would I need to bind it that would hold up to traffic and vacuuming?

Hi Nonni, have you seen this Youtube video on binding a rug?
Home Depot apparently has self adhesive tape for binding carpet edges too
hope that pin will help https://www.pinterest.com/pin/214835844699692796/
I've always taken mine to a rug store. They can perform that and have the large commercial sewing machines that bind.
I would probably seek out a professional due to fraying and raveling :)

Help this helps you out. https://www.pettyjohnscleaning.com/how-to-resize-rug/
Cutting is best done with a utility knife & fresh blades.
As noted above, you can buy edge binding fabric edging at many DIY Stores.
Pro edgebinding companies can either sew on that cloth tape or they can stitch the entire edge.
I would evaluate how much that rug is worth to me, as I have priced making remnants of my Designer Carpet into Retro Boomerang Rugs and the DIY edgebinding, itself, was going to be over $50. So I couldn’t sell them for $100, to cover my carpet costs & my labor.
I would find someone who does carpet or rugs but you may find it is more expensive to cut the rug down and rebind it than it is to replace it
Hello many people use a glue gun with carpet binding, but for my situation I wanted to remove the fringe from the Karastan carpet’s on opposite ends. I used a black fabric tape and it was a wonderful solution for my situation.
If your carpet is not thin enough to allow for this fold over this carpet DIY might be suggested. Hope this helps

I have had the damaged edges/binding on a couple area rugs repaired at an upholstery shop. You should be able to call for how much they charge, goes by length.
Considering you'd like to make it a circle, I'd suggest taking it to a rug company as they'll be able to lay it out and cut it perfectly as well as bind the edge nicely. Cutting and binding is a lot of work and to get it right isn't the easiest thing to do.
