The first time my husband built steps, he got a 2 x 12 and took it to the pre-made steps on the other side of our local home improvement store. Then he traced on the 2 x 12 the exact shape of the steps, he did this on 2 boards about 5 ft long. Then he bought 2 x 8 boards for the steps. He cut the risers out, then added the step boards. It was easy for him to do it himself after that.
