How do i transform this staircase?
I need inspiration! This stairway is in dire need of a makeover. I find the task daunting but maybe with some ideas I'll feel motivated. They are in a 100+ old home and have lots of scratches in the wood from dogs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The easiest thing to do is sand out the rough spots and paint them. We did this once in a house where the treads were a mess. We used brown floor paint - to blend in with the railing and ballusters. Then I stenciled a leaf design on each riser. It came out really pretty.
It is a piece of cake! See Etsy and Pinterest for tons of ideas!!! Tile or paint risers. Rub on paint transfers with beautiful elegant quotes can be done on each riser. Many many ideas! Someone on here told me truck bed liner paint would hold up against big dogs. I painted my floors but need to redo. I rescue and have a big pack so mine take a beating. You can resurface them without sanding which would make them slip proof too. Deck paints can do this giving a non smooth surface but you need to be careful of what u choose due to VOCs. You can sprinkle with sand while wet or add to your paint. A one coat paint that has primer will cover any fill in and sanding of gouges.
Looks like paint would go a long ways
The easiest makeover might be to add a runner. You could pick one with colors you love - and it would cover the bulk of the dog nail scratches. :)
I agree with Frugal Family Times, but i'd also sand down to bare wood, stain or paint as you prefer and seal. If you use the thinner rods to keep the stair runner in place, it avoids any potential for falls.

Give them a fresh coat of paint and stair treads. Look at a catalog called Improvements, there are a lot of choices. Treads are much easier than a runner. You use small nails with larger heads to attach to each step. Pick a color paint that won't show scuffs so much like a grey shade and a darker color tread that won't show dirt as much. I have two dogs so my stairs are a dark stain with dark carpet stair tread.
Hi Lorraine, not sure how detailed you want to get, but there are some fabulous ideas out there! Here are a few, hope they help you out.

Hi Lorraine. I would first fill in any holes and scratches with wood putty. Allow to dry according to label instructions. Then sand everything down. Wipe all sanding dust off with a damp cloth. And then stain or paint. You should seal them when you're finished. That would protect them from your dogs. Good luck Lorraine.
Hello,
Inside or out? You could try a new coat of paint and maybe some wide coloured Gaffer tape running up the stairs either side (Just in a bit from the edge! You could also use something like Contact or other self adhesive plastic on the riser ( YOU CAN BUY STUFF ESPECIALLY FOR STAIRCASES) Add loose Narrow Rubber Mat Treads. Carpet only the Treads.. Hope that is of some help!
You could tile it, which would be fairly simple and "dog proof". Sanding and refinishing with either paint or stain will be tough unless you remove the spindles. I've seen people use contact paper and seal it but I would test one before doing all of them.
You could sand and re-paint the stairs with a porch and deck paint. Carpet treads (or a carpet runner) in the middle will eliminate the scratches caused by the dog.
Do you have pets?
They can destroy painted surfaces.....at least my 70# dog running like a locomotive. Our wooden deck stairs need yearly touch up.
A new paint application might be lovely?
Most Economical: Paint stairs & risers one color, then stencil or paint stair risers with #s, letters/words, stencil your favorite pattern in contrasting color. Or, use a wallpaper border you like that goes with your decor.
Lorraine yes here are pictures. Risers white treads stained and carpet treads
If you find that even thinking about redoing the stairway is overwhelming, then I would not advise you to take on the whole project yourself.
I disagree with others who have said that sanding and painting, or tiling over, would be easiest. IMO the easiest way to add new life to the stairwell is to hire a professional carpet installer to put new hard twist carpet on the stairs. One day and the work will be all done, from start to finish. It will be less expensive to have just the stairs (risers and treads) covered with carpet, and not the stringers.
Before the new carpet is installed, to put more of your own handiwork and creativity into the project, what you might consider doing yourself is to paint the top trim of the stringers a contrasting color.
