Paint is always an easy, relatively inexpensive way to make over a staircase... you could paint the risers a different color than the tops of the stairs.
I agree with Faith. Paint is definitely your best option. Just make sure to use a paint that withstand the constant use (I used porch paint on my stairs (2 coats) and then sealed them with a non-yellowing polyacrylic).
