How to remove stairs?

Call in a builder to help you decide if it is a job you really need to do! He will give a price and time it will take and if you ask will tell you what he would intend to do.

Get more than one builder to come along. Then you should have all the information you require to either get him to do it, or do it yourself, or leave well alone etc........

Check your local building codes. You may not be able to remove the stairs. If anything was to occur to the roof or attic access to the attic is needed. You homeowners insurance can also be cancel for lack of safety issues.

Hi Rose, I agree that you should perhaps get a building contractor or two to look at what you are thinking of ding with your stairs. You may find that they are a part of the support system for the attic and roof. Best to get a pro to take a look and discuss what might be done and how. Then you can decide if you can tackle it yourself if it's safe to do so.

If it is an original part of the house, why would you remove them? Never remove an original part of an old house like that unless it is a hazard. Put your money and effort into fixing them and making them a pretty asset to the home.

HI Rose, quick question. What is behind/under the stairs. is it a set of stairs running down to a main floor or basement? If not are you using the space under them already? It is not likely they are structural if there are walls on both sides of the stairs, but to be sure call a contractor to check it out for you if you do not know how to do that yourself. You will probably need a building permit, and will need to leave an access to the attic space.

A sawsaw will remove the board. You can put an attic drop stairs in and then build your closet. Take the risers off first and then that will tell you more about load bearing or not. If the stringers are part of the structural support which I doubt leave them and put up a closet door
