A photo might have helped me get the picture of your particular staircase, but that aside, \you could take out all of the internal rails and replace with Metal Scrolls or Ironwork, or Tubes or special clips and then use Toughened glass as I did. Let your creative self come out. Enjoy the process.

You can remove your current stair treads and replace them with nice wooden ones. Same for the railings, lots of options with wood and metal choices.

One of the most cost-effective ways to update an older staircase is to refinish it. It’s amazing how you can transform your stairs by painting the risers (the vertical portion of the stair) the same color as your trim, and refinishing the treads ( the horizontal portion of the stair). Don’t forget to update the railing by painting the balusters and refinishing the handrail.

Examine them to see how they are attached - probably screws. Remove, replace wood, re-screw in!

What is wrong with the stairwell that needs repairing, or how is it damaged? Or are you wanting to just update how it looks?

Home Depot sells all the wood for railings right on the floor. They have the balusters and posts and railings. I think that would be the least expensive place to grab supplies for DIY.
