Hello Leen,
You should be able to release the top or the bottom and work from there. You will find they have been secured in the crease of each stair with either a grip or tacks and should just pull up! Fit new carpet back in the same way as you found it. Best wishes

Skip laying carpet. Pull up old carpet and lay vinyl plank or laminate over any old linoleum underneath following directions on box.
