How to update chunky dark wood bannisters that are sturdy but outdate?
My bannisters are very simple with 2 by 4"s. can I introduce a pattern between them? incorporate a pattern into them?

Photo of what you have? Maybe just painting them will update them.
Hi Jeanette! Do you mean putting a pattern between spindles? If you wanted to do a pattern I would do every second or third space between the spindles, depending on how many spindles you have. I think between every one would be too busy.
Hi Jeanette! I would try painting them white.

I would just pry those old 2x4s off and put a new wood bannister on, I used the kind that is sculpted so your hand fits comfortably decending the stairs...... a great upgrade for me.... https://www.homedepot.com/p/Stair-Parts-6010-14-ft-Unfinished-Poplar-Plowed-Stair-Handrail-with-Fillet-6010P-PSR-1400L/205666272 I just oiled mine with teak oil.
Hello Jeanette,
Maybe Metal wrought iron in place of every second or third upright, (maybe painted gold) or you could carve into them, as long as you have the ability to reproduce the design again and again. You could even Board them in and then decorate the boarding with wallpaper etc. Enjoy the journey!
