Staircase remodel

I pulled the carpet off of the staircase in my home and found the usual - builder grade steps made for carpet. In other words, these were not finished steps underneath that I could just refinish and move on. So, I purchased treads and risers (nice and unfinished) that are a bit longer than the steps (2.5 inches). I am tempted to handle this project by myself by having the steps cut down and renting a nail gun to attach. I done a lot of do-it-yourself projects but never of this magnitude. What problems could I face and is it workable? Sam

If you have good construction skills... you can do the job yourself... just do some good research and find some good tutorials on installing stair treads...you could also have a contractor install the treads... and then do the risers yourself. You could also do the painting, staining and finishing yourself... HomeAdvisor.com or AngiesList.com can help you find a verified contractor or handy man to help with the project.

The cons to doing it yourself would be an incorrect fit causing a trip hazard to anyone using the stairs.... and be aware.... that now that the carpet has been removed.... the original stairs may not be up to code and may have to be brought up to date.
