Most towns have online sites that explain specific building code. We had a railing to the basement and had to change the height and also add uprights 3” apart so children could neither fall thru nor get their heads stuck.

  • Fasten the rail into studs in the wall that flank the stairs. You will need professional help if it is a stand alone staircase with walls.

When the top edge of a stair rail system also serves as a handrail, the height of the top edge shall be not more than 37 inches (94 cm) nor less than 36 inches(91.5 cm) from the upper surface of the stair rail system to the surface of the tread, in line with the face of the riser at the forward edge of the tread.

If you are trying to determine a side, you can choose whichever you will be most comfortable using. In our house we have a short wall that ends at a landing and a long wall that goes to the other side of the landing. The builder put the rail on the short wall. We also have a long staircase that has a wooden open rail on one side and that hand rail was placed on the opposite side of the stair.
