This 13-year old townhouse featured the original, filthy builder-grade carpet. We removed the carpet to unearth builder-grade stairs. The treads were yellow pine, the risers were crappy OSB (oriented strand board).

THE CHALLENGE

We faced two issues:

  1. Budget - Our first thought was to install pre-made bull-nosed vinyl treads to match the vinyl plank flooring planned for the main floor. At a price tag of $30-100 per tread this was a budget buster, and did not address the stair risers, which needed to be resurfaced due to the rough character of the cheap buikder grade stairs.
  2. Tenants and Pets - the townhouse is occupied and has 2 cats. With the master bedroom upstairs, the makeover needed to be completed in one day and allow people and pet traffic immediately. If access is not an issue, the entire treads can be painted.

MATERIALS

Peel and stick vinyl plank - 1 per riser (Home Depot)

Behr Porch Paint

Bull nosed rubber treads - 1 per tread

Adhesive

Carpet tape

THE SOLUTION

Using inexpemsive peel and stick vinyl plank to cover the risers provided an inexpensive, easy to apply scuff proof surface which will tie the stairs in to the flooring plann d for the main floor. Painting the sidesand backs of the treads allowed for foot-traffic and access to the upstairs bedroom during the project.
