Tip: House plants as patio summer spectaculars!!

When filling large pots for summer patio planters, cover the hole at the bottom with a folded piece of newspaper. Then crunch up more newspaper to fill the bottom quarter of the pot. Fill with whatever planter mix you need to use to the very top of the pot. As the summer goes on, the newspaper will disintigrate into compost and feed the roots of your plants and lower the soil level in the pot. Now there is room to water/ soak as needed.

According to the size of your planter, use baby diapers (newborn - large) in the bottom of the planter, add potting soil and plant..water till the top of the dirt is damp.. This is particularly helpful if you have a coconut lining to your hanging basket. Put diaper in center of coconut liner, dirt and plant..water. This will cut down on the amount of watering you must do b/c the coconut liner is porous (to air) and therefore, drying out.
