It depends on what you want. I do simple 6" or 4" tiles at Habitat for Humanity houses. We lay some cardboard shims on the counter. The tiles are fastened to wall using a bead of Power Grab (round the perimeter). The tiles have built in spacers for the gap. When tiles are set we use grout that comes in a caulking tube to fill gaps between tiles and at bottom and top gaps.
