How do I remove an old small tile backsplash?

Smash it out with a hammer. Just be careful not to exert too much pressure to avoid breaking the wall behind the tile.

You can start with a grout saw to work away some of the old grout so you can then get a chisel between the tiles and lever or chip them out. Be sure to wear eye protection and gloves though!

My tile installer laid new tile on top of the old in my kitchen. Less labor intensive. It’s been up for more than a year. Old tile was ceramic and new tile is glass.

With a scraper and a hammer, starting from the center and moving out.

You could always paint it and use different colors to change it up.

There's another option that is inexpensive and easy that another Hometalker just told me about that he used. You can install a faux tin backsplash over existing tile using construction adhesive. The panels are made of PVC but are safe for behind the stove if it has a control panel at the back burners (not a slide in or drop in unit). It comes in different metallic finishes.
