How can I tile over a fiberglass shower surround?

Is this even possible? I would much prefer tile rather than the fiberglass shower surround I have. Would I have to remove the fiberglass surround first then tile?

Yes, you will need to remove the surround so the tile has a flat and solid base to adhere to. Otherwise, the surround might have some "give" to it and the tiles would crack. Tiling is quite easy though. Most home improvement stores have a quick class on how to tile and I'm sure Utube has a ton of videos as well.

Good luck and upload before and after pictures. It's always nice to see those.

Hi. If the surround is attached to the wall, you're in business. If it's free standing the weight of the tiles is too much for the fiberglass. However, you can consider using faux stick on tiles. You attach them to a clean surface (use TSP to clean the fiberglass) using contractor glue, along with the stick strip on the back. Once the glue is dry, seal the edges with bathroom caulk. You can even mimic the look of grout with the caulk. Happy DIY'ing!

It would be best to remove the surround first so that you have a solid surface for the tile to stick to otherwise it may crack when you step into the shower.

If you have your heart set on tiles, it is best to remove the surround first. However, the cost of completing this project correctly is more expensive than just the cost of the tiling materials. Once the surround is removed, construction to build new proper bathroom walls to which the tiles will adhere correctly will likely be necessary.

Unless you have all the tools and necessary experience required to do this properly, you will have to pay someone else to do the job.

You're welcome. Although the responses you received may have been not the quick fix answers you might have been hoping for, you approached the subject the right way - by asking questions first.

Maybe put the new bath on your Santa wish list for another year.
