For a new surround to be successful, you need to tear the old one out.
Tile will not hold to fiberglass or composite. Tear the old one out and replace it or install cement board and tile.
Since you are down to the studs, I think you are better off replacing everything because you would want the fiberglass to fail and ruin all your work. Good luck.
