How to find old tiles to match?

Heather Aragon
by Heather Aragon
So thanks to Hometalk DIYers I came across a awesome idea to turn a old hutch into a island, which I had the perfect hutch and table to put together for this project! But I tore out a cabinet with a bar to open up some space lol. And now I can’t find matching tiles to fill in where they tiles around the old cabinet!
Mother than that everything is turning out pretty well!
I could also use ideas on what to do with back splash the isnt costly!

My finished piece!

Also, check estate sales, garage sales - because I have the leftover tiles from our bathroom make-over ten years ago in the "shed". I've seen boxes of tiles, etc. at estate sales. Us more mature people always think we will need them again! The island makeover is terrific!

Where I live Habitat for Humanity has a store where you can find older and out of date supplies. I have taken and bought things for my sort of old house. Inexpensive.

Rule of thumb, If you cant match, abstract. Eg...painting walls that have older paint, that you can't match, use a different color on the one wall that needs paint. Not close in color, but total different.

If these tiles are the floor tiles, or otherwise attached to your house: Look in the dark corners of your basement or crawl space, attic, garage or storage building. Often home owners or contractors will leave left over materials behind and they get put in some out of the way space and forgotten.

Try Habitat for Humanity thrift stores.

Amazon has an amazing amount of tiles online or try a carpet/tile store in town. You may even find something else you like better. :)

If your house is part of a housing development, check with neighbors to see if they have any matching tiles. Builders tend to use the same material in many houses

You might check an architectural recycler to see if you can find those tiles, or ask a local tile store if they are replacing any to save some for you.... those are pretty standard builders tiles.

Be aware that tiles come in different thicknesses too. I found what I thought was a perfect match but they were thinner than the original tiles. I beefed up the adhesive and it was not a problem but if they had been thicker it would have been a problem.

Try your local Habitat for Humanity, I have seen these tiles there and they are really cheap, like 50 cents a tile.
