My husband used to do maintenance for a company that owned rental houses. They requested he do this in a few kitchens. He put them down with additional adhesive, Power Grab. He had to go back and replace a few someone else put down without adding adhesive but never any he did. He left them about a year after that so I'm unsure about longevity.
Not sure on what kind of tile you are planning to use. If the tile is firm like porcelain, then you can put it over top without worrying about the former pattern. Rough up the old formica and remove any grease or dirt that may be on there first. Then apply your base compound. You can butt the tiles together making for less grout or just use the small spacers between so that you can grout.
