I used a subway type that came in sheets about 12 x 12. It was a biege/brown with a lot of variation . A absolutely love it. Not much more work than the big tiles except for cutting a few tiles at the edges and corners. The big tiles are very trendy and I think will go out of style quicker. All that work should last a long time.

Hi C, I think it really boils down to personal preference. Here's a link with vertical tiles: https://www.google.com/search?q=pictures+of+vertical+tile+in+the+shower&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS781US781&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjG473jrsDbAhWttVkKHVI_A0cQsAQIKA&biw=1600&bih=794
And here's a link with Subway Tiles: https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS781US781&biw=1600&bih=794&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=moUYW-ivOqXl5gKsiKmIDw&q=pictures+of+subway+tile+in+the+shower&oq=pictures+of+subway+tile+in+the+shower&gs_l=img.3...79344.82693.0.83329.14.14.0.0.0.0.124.1319.6j7.13.0....0...1c.1.64.img..2.0.0....0.Ae-hh2pa3NE
Personally, I like some of the vertical ideas. Much more original!
It may help to look at both and then decide what look you like best.
Good luck!
I think subway tile is a classic look that never goes out of style. It's my favorite.
I like both, depends on your budget too, I like the large oblong tiles that are 26 x 6.
Personally, having had trendy tile that went out of style fast, I would stick with something like white subway tile which is a classic.
However, having said that here are style trends for tiles as you requested. :)
Pattern seems prevalent. Big tiles are recommended to make a smaller bathroom look bigger.

I prefer marble, 3 pieces, one on each side and one piece in the back, three seams and you’re done. I’m not a big fan of tile and grout, been there done that many times. I like easy clean.
Keep in mind, the smaller the tile, the more grout that needs sealing and cleaning. You can get bigger rectangle tiles and put them in a subway pattern.
Hello, hope this helps you,
