How do I tile over existing tile?

Painting /stenciling ceramic tile is very popular these days, but I would like to tile over my existing tile. How can this be accomplished without removing the existing tile?

Not recommended in most circumstances. Where is the tile now? Floor? Wall?

Tile needs a smooth stable surface to adhere. Always best to remove the old tile. One exception....you can tile large format tile over small format tile. The grout lines and imperfections of small tile will not interfere with the large tile.
20X20 over 12x12 is good. Two points....3/8" to 1/2" grooves on the thinset....large format tile butter the back of each tile to guarantee good adhesion. Also buttering creates a suction bond with the thinset on the floor. Please post your project when you do it. Would be a great learning experience for a lot of DIY'ers.
