I love red, white and blue decor.

Every summer I enjoy adding decorations to my screened porch and outdoor areas in patriotic themes. Just a little something with red, white and blue that stays up all summer from Memorial Day until Labor Day. This year I added some patriotic painted bucket planters for succulents.

Wash and treat the galvanized buckets for paint

I started out with a set of five small galvanized buckets I purchased at Home Depot for just a few dollars each. As you can see they all had a shiny surface which isn't easy to add paint to.

So I first washed them down in white vinegar to distress and treat the outside of each bucket to accept paint.

Blue painters tape and chalk paint

For a couple of the buckets, I used blue painters tape to create stripes around and up and down the outside of the buckets.

Each bucket got a base coat of white chalk paint. The base coat of chalk paint will make it easier for the acrylic craft paints to stick to the outside of the bucket.

Paint each bucket with acrylic paint in red, white, or blue

After the chalk paint layer was dry, I then applied three coats of acrylic paint over the chalk layer.

Hanging planters with hooks

The other two buckets with decorative stripes are hanging from my grandfather's old ladder by using plant hooks purchased at the Dollar Tree.

Decorate with ribbon and plant the succulents

I planted a variety of succulents in each bucket and decorated the buckets with patriotic themed burlap ribbon.

The goal is now to keep the succulents alive all summer.
