I don't think Pvc pipe will be as strong as wood. If it is going to be a longish length you will need a support to hold the middle up.

I have done this, but did put a brace in the center to add stability. Use a size that is close to a wooden pole to add stability. Just happened to have it so tried and it worked fine.
