How can I upcycle wood slats from disassembled crates?

We have some really thin wooden crate slats that are the weight of balsa wood. I took the crates apart by cutting the metal wires that held the slats in place. Any ideas for the wood slats, measuring 4" X 20", we have 15 of them.

Hello, I was thinking you can like;y still use them for storage, if you painted them, they would be a bit more water proof, but maybe something like the attached link has

Glad to hear I helped a bit, because they are sort of flimsy, you wont be able to do too much with them, maybe a backsplash type decor , but you would have to paint them to water proof them.

  • You could put a few of them together and create a rustic sign.

You could use them as a barnwood type of accent wall.

      Hi Mogie,

Thanks for the suggestion, hopefully a few more of these crates (they had ears of corn shipped in them) will come our way. Right now there are not enough to make an accent wall. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi there, we use scraps of balsa wood to make these easy frames - https://acraftymix.com/blog/easiest-diy-frames-ever/

Sometimes it is better to build up a store of supplies and tools. My husband picks up every piece of useful wood he sees at our town transfer station. . . he doesn't necessarily have a project in mind but he stores the wood till inspiration strikes. These old boards stored behind our tool shed eventually became this plant stand for wintering over some plants.

      Hi Emily,

Thanks for getting back to me. I enjoy the way your husband thinks and creates. I have the same urge, collect wood others have no purpose for, that is just what I did with these flimsy crates. They were of no practical use in the condition they were in, so salvaging the wood seemed like a good option.
