How can I easily cover a Christmas box?

I purchased (after holiday clearance) 3 heavy duty Christmas boxes with the hinged lid that closes shut with Velcro. I have no intention of using them for the holidays, I wanted to somehow cover them, cover the Christmas design and use them for storage in the living room. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. However I do NOT use a sewing machine!

What are the boxes made of? Could you paint them?
Contact paper, paint, mod podge, washi tape!
Paint them or glue on material
Paint them with chalk paint, and use removable wallpaper (maybe one that looks like wood) on the top!
Since they are cardboard they may not like waterbased paints and glues and could wrinkle. If you use spay adhesive you can cover them with paper or fabric. Best to do the spray adhesive outside.
