I do not know what to do with glass overhead light fixture

Tracey
by Tracey
I have some overhead glass light shades and I'm not sure what simple thing may be to do with them outside. I thought that I saw something on hometalk website but can't find it. Any help?
Mine is more rounded but similar.

I see nothing wrong with these lights. I have one in a 20 foot hallway that I would never change as it puts out enough light to see where you are going.

I am replacing the round drop jar fixtures with those kind in my bathroom. But I am texture painting the bases because the original is shinny gold and I want antique or bronze type. But if you are determine to get rid of them, sell on ebay, glue two together for a garden globe, bird feeder/bath, chicken coop sky/wall window light, top of a windchime.

I have a long hall upstairs, with three light. I put one light at top of stairs, and one at end of hall. They give off enough light to completely cover entire hall without using the center light. Love them.

The ones I have can be used for my fresh fruit. I also display during the Holidays with pine ones. I decoupage one for Valentine's Day wrapped candy, one flatter one I use for catch all at the end of day, loose coins, keys, notes for MY TO DO list or grocery shopping.

If you're not planning on using them inside then maybe Bird baths?

U could glue all the pieces together & invert it to become a lamp shade to old or outdated lamp OR while gluing, you could also add a napkin ring on the bottom & use it as a fruit bowl in the kitchen OR you could insert it (glued together) into a wicker basket (for a liner) & use it to store little stuff either on the lavatory, on a desk, table or on a nightstand. :)

Depending on the shape you could use it as a dome to cover food, cheese, pies or cookies. Put a nice handle in the top. A round cabinet door handle would work

You could use it as a form to make a bowl from yarn or twine, similar to these ornaments: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/craft/ornaments/how-to-make-yarn-ball-ornaments-5928941

you can use colored stones and silicone (clear for gutter flashing) and make a really cool 1/2 globe ball or you can use glass paint to get a different color and put lights under it for your outdoor table in the summer.

My first thought...if you still have the metal rings that the glass sits in, I'd drill three holes (equally spaced) in the rings. Then I'd attach chains and turn them into outdoor plant hangers or a bird feeder with the bottom hole sealed so the seed won't spill out. Having said that, one could become a mini birdbath, again with the hole sealed. Another possibility is that you could fill them with tiny LED lights and use them for "mood" lighting for a porch or deck. In either of these cases, they wouldn't have to be hanging unless you wanted to do that. They could simply sit out of the way with a bundle of lights stashed underneath. Unobtrusive, but interesting, especially in spaces that tend to be a bit dark.

I am changing all my light fixtures so they are easier to reach when I have to change the light bulbs and also I prefer the country look.

Can't use it to cover food as the opening is way too small and it sat in some kind of electrical item with foam which you put into the wiring. Some things may be okay but wlll take other ideas.

@Ruth That is a good idea, and also, people make glass flowers with glass plates drilled in the center

Get a lamp kit and a wine bottle or any heavy bottle and use the overhead light shade for the shade on the bottle

I took the "guts" out of mine (purchased at yard sale for 25 cents a piece), installed a set of solar string lights and used them to illuminate my deck steps. Our old dog seems to appreciate them at night.

I've made bird baths or bird feeders out of old shades. You can dress them up or down depending if you attach them to stand up posts, or hang them.

I have some of these and this is what I am going to do... Since there is already a hole in the top, I am going to add a pretty glass knob on the top, such a drawer pull. I think this would be a cute way to cover a cheese plate while entertaining, etc.

I have seen these used as cake plate covers with a decorative nob and washer to hold it in place. Glue a comparably sized plate to a candle holder and use as the cake stand or cheese stand. Individual globe covers can also be used as bases for plate stand. These are inexpensive in thrift stores near new developments. Home buyers typically get rid of builder fixtures.

Open or hanging bird feeders, hanging plant holders. You may also be able to remove the top and bottom and glue a base to the glass part for many different decorative uses. If you have more than one glass globe you might glue them together to make an outdoor gazing ball. Good luck!

How about adding a center chain with one of the light fixtures and make it into a pendant light. Also, I have pinned a photo of a kitchen make over. On the shelves, where she has her favorite plates she has them covered with lids of cake stands. Maybe you could use them like that. It was very pretty on her shelves.
  • Faye Faye on Jan 22, 2016
Gee I was thinking that you can make it into a bowl or planter.. You would need to attach a base to it. There is a couple ways for doing that.

They could be made into a cascading waterfall. Seal the bottom. Another suggestion is to take the entire fixture to the local Habitat Restore as a donation. Other charities will also take them.
