I would take rope and wrap it around the spindle. If you want a side table a round of plywood fixed to the top. If you have a smaller one you can add a foam round for a cushy seat....and upholster with a graphic pattern.

Make a pallet wood top. Make round or square top. Put design on top & put clear stuff on top. Good luck
