How can I make a flower planter out of a oblong gas grill,
and what color should I paint it to blend in.
the grill is higher so I could make a vegetable planter out of it

Hi sounds like fun. Here's what I would do . Well if my Mr would let ,etc. Lol I would clean it out real good, making sure not to leave any grease that might endup smelling ransid. Then line the grill in heavy plastic. Add some good sized rocks for drainage. Or if it's a large grill pull some of those small plastic drink bottles out of the recycling bin and throw them in for the drainage. Now would be a good time to make sure you DO have the drain holes in the bottom of the grill. But if it's elevated that's easy. Now comes the most fun, add your soil and Plants .Please remember if the grill is black you don't want it in the sun, as it will cook those pretty plants you just planted. Enjoy GO forth and plant. 😆 Gigi

Thanks Gigi , I'll probable paint it a darker green and keep it in a part shady area.

      What does the plastic do?

I thought that over the grill holes in the bottom I could put some

medium stones, like they use for garden-beds.

Just remove the inner grates and any mechanical parts, then clean it well to insure there is not residue inside. Paint it a color that will go with your home...or go with a nice shade of green to give it a garden look. Then, add your soil and plants, and you should be all set. Most grills have a few small holes in the bottom for air circulation, but if yours does not, you will want to drill a couple of holes for drainage for best results.

Thanks Michele, when my granddaughters com back from their

vacation, I have them take a photo before and when I'm done with the

project, so my Home-talk family can see it.

  • Go for it! I would just use some large rocks and coffee filters to block the holes at the bottom. Fill with pottting soil and plant your plants. If you want to paint the outside, do that first. If you want it to "blend in" instead of standing out, choose a pretty shade of green. Have fun!

I have done this for the last 5 years. My version:

~ mine sets on a patio with no shade in Southwestern Idaho weather up to 109 + degrees often.

~ clean out all the guts of the grill

~ fill the bottom third with cut up pool tubes ( very inexpensive)

~ place a couple of (cheapest) open disposable baby diapers across the pool tubes. This helps retain moisture as do the pool tubes.

    ~ fill with potting soil

~ water until the water comes out the drain at the bottom and let dry until the soil is to your liking.

    ~ plant

~ amazingly one year the petunias can back voluntarily??????

Ooops, one thing I left out was i cut and placed small wire netting before adding the potting soil . . it helps to keep the soil in place. You are welcome and Good planting, Rosel

I was thinking the plastic would keep it from rusting out in far too short a time. This is such a great idea by the way. Please post a picture when you get it completed. Waiting impatiently---Gigi
