How can I turn an ordinary sofa table into a sleek modern desk?

i really like my sofa table and I've been using it as a desk. its just the right size and with my 2 drawer file cabinet underneath...its almost perfect. but they are 2 different colors and need to coordinated with the rest of the living room. also I would like suggestions for covering all the wiring coming from various items on the desk or at least make them neater.
so, this is the area i'm referring to.  the  basket isn't usually there...LOL

i would say, do it with mirror tiles and then put a pc of glass over the top part for a smooth writing surface.

I would stick with the black and white theme you have going . . . Paint the table/desk black and have a piece of glass cut and trimmed off (those edges are sharp!) to fit the top. Zip tip the cords and tape them to the back of the table legs. If the basket serves a purpose, pop in a black liner or trim with black grograin ribbon.

I see some red? Reflected in the mirror. Paint it that same color and use silver desk accessories. You can cut PVC tubing in half lengthwise, paint it the same color as the wall and hide all of the cords behind it then attach to the wall undernesth the desk. It holds a LOT of cords.

I like the idea for hiding all the cords. Although red in a desk top is very distracting when you're trying to work.

Id leave the desk as is. Silver desk accessories sounds fancy!

I like a lot of the ideas from others. Once you have decided on a color for your desk, I would have the glass top cut a littler larger to give you more space. You can also have the edges beveled and the corners rounded so that they will not be sharp. I would also buy some neat looking desk type storage containers and label them for clutter on your desk. I hate clutter! You can find all kinds of things in an office supply store and online and in lots of colors.

Storage seems to be the problem that takes away from the sleek modern look. How about trying an old drawer tipped on it side at the back of the desk. Add a couple of dividers and you have cubbyholes as well as an upper surface to put things. Try it first to see if it works for you. Then you can paint the whole thing to coordinate with your color schemes. You can always raise the mirror and pics a bit to accommodate the addition of the drawer. If the drawer doesn't work, it is easy to make a small addition to the back using pallet boards, then you can adjust the height and width. And don't forget to hide those wires for the finished look.

Attach wood at the bottom that covers wires leaving an inch at bottom for access, paint it same color as desk

Hi, Love the idea, I would paint it black. Move the mirror up a bit so your monitor screen can sit on an box painted black. (better for your neck). Then to hide the cords put a back panel attached to the table legs. Adding glass to the top is an excellent idea. If you have room, add sides to the table and cubbies down the sides to slide in baskets for extra storage. Small baskets can hold a lot of supplies. Good luck would love to see it finished.

In the home, the best way to do away with the wires is to be totally blue tooth. That is not practical but what is practical is buying a conduit designed for this purpose and put all of the wires in the one conduit. The conduit can be painted the same colour as the walls and be nearly invisible. Be sure though that the conduit starts close to the floor and does not end till you reach the desk top. Lowes or Home Depot will have these items in the electrical department.....good luck

Ikea sells adjustable table legs for under 10 bucks. they are made of steel, so you can get 4 of those, screw them onto your table top, then since the legs are steel, you can drill holes near the top and the bottom to put the wires thru them. you can also use the same general idea with pvc pipes home depot sells the pipes, at cheap prices, and you can find screw-on ends to adjust height.

The flip side would be a nice glossy red or white to complement items in the room. I agree with glass for the top. I like the idea of having the drawer as a cubby if that works, keeping it the same color of desk. I also purchased a sheet of aluminum from the hardware store and screwed it in place above my desk,( careful shape edges) I used wasbi tape around sharp edges. This gives you a magnetic board to post pictures, notes, reminders, sticky notes etc. Agree with conduit or pvc painted color of wall for cords or go wireless. Would love to see what you do with this project!!!!

I would buy a few stick on floor tiles that look like marble or granite. You can cut them easily to be the right size. Add a decorative ribbon to hide the edges and create a border-glue on. As for the legs, you can purchase spindles for less than $5.00 a piece and paint to match color of tiles and they are sturdy enough for a desk, just don't sit on it. Use small strips of Velcro to tie all the cords together or use the pvc idea and paint to match wall or wind the same ribbon around it from the border on desk top. Have fun
