How do I repurpose department store shelving?
The Macy's store went out of business. I purchased display shelves/etageres but the glass shelves broke in transit. What can I use - other than plywood - to make shelves so I can use these? Also any tips on painting? They are chrome.

Luckily we no longer need several medical walkers? Instead of donating these well used items, can they be made into something different?
Cut thick shelving board to go in it's place. It can be stained and is very trendy right now. I think I saw a project where someone did that to all the shelves in a bakers rack and it was very pretty. You can also replace with tile, I've seen that on coffee tables.
As for the chrome, rough with steel wool then clean with denatured alcohol to remove the residue. Spray paint with RustOleum hammered paint. The color choice would be dictated by what you decide to do on the shelves.
You could cover wood with contact paper.
Where are the shelves being used and what for? Like a home , garage? Kitchen , bedroom? You have a pic?
