Because it was near any kind of farm animals, I'd make absolute sure I sanitized it as thoroughly as humanly possible. I mean, you are using it in a kitchen around food and people. I'd suggest high pressure steam first, then the above mentioned Rust-Oleum. It sounds like it would look great. But you don't want rust dust particles floating around the house and breathing them in. Or a child to touch a surface that has the dust and then ingest it.
