Dress it up or paint it, use it as a loose button holder/sewing notions holder, keep old coins you might be saving in it, anything small enough to contain in it. By the uniqueness of the storage box, you will always remember where that "special something is stored.
there are many examples of round boxes that have been painted or covered with fabric that can be used for storage. I have seen small tables make with them. I made one into a sewing box that I keep for mending.
re: making it a wall shelf. You can divide the circle into quarters and store yarn or fabric or 4 small dolls. I'd use then balsa wood for this.
I have one I have thought about using in the guest bath... wall hung... to hold towels...
