Kewpie Dolls - What to do?

B.J. B
by B.J. B
I was cleaning up my craft space and stuck these guys in my mail bin just to get them off my desk. I didn't realize how dumb it looked until I glanced up at them and for some reason it cracked me up. I really must do something with them. Any ideas? I rescued them from a box of my Mom's old craft supplies.

Oh this is just too cute B.J. The fact it's labeled "out box" makes it all the funnier. Although I must say they look quite happy where they are so I think I'd leave them as I can't imagine your not smiling whenever they caught your eye. They're just too darn cute! Post it on your facebook page and ask friends to "caption this".

I like it! I bet it was one of those funny moments when you realized where you had put them and what the box said. I know that I would have rolled on the floor laughing! Not sure what you should do with them but Halloween is coming up and I bet they would look cute all dressed up for the occasion. Are Kewpies too cute to be evil looking? LOL:)

I love these dolls, I have 2 of them and they are jointed. I leave them undressed and I put one in an old ceramic bowl, so she looks like she is peeking out. The other one sits in a small birdbath. They always make me smile!
  • Beth Bleas Beth Bleas on Sep 28, 2013

Put some tiny toys in with them right where they are, a tiny quilt scrap to support the scene........Make yourself laugh every time you walk by...

How cute they are! My mom is from Germany, married my dad when he was stationed there before coming home from Korea. She gave me an original for Christmas as a child. Wish I knew where it was because they are worth some money now but Kewpie dolls always bring me good memories. :o)

place them in surprise spots in the garden! In former gnome mans land areas! A white fuzzy scrap of material as ones beard! A leopard triangle as a loin cloth(Tarzan-ish) or all them as munchkins in an Oz gnome/fairy garden Have fun wig on one as Dorothy,Lion, a teen tiny perfume funnel as tin man,

I love the look of this, just the way they are. Simplistic and cute.

Loved seeing these again. It took me back to my childhood when I had a large cupi doll with a head that turned to different faces: awake, asleep, crying I think. Would love to have some of these. Where did you get them?
    • Jenny Jenny on Sep 28, 2013
@Sandyb i had a doll hedda get bedda doll. you turned a knob on her head. she was happy, sleeping or sick.
  • Cecilia Oakley Cecilia Oakley on Sep 28, 2013
They are cute, I say keep them until you are bored with them, then give them away to a rescue shelter (with clothes on). Some little one who had to run away from home without any toys would love one. Enjoy the day!

I used to crochet a little girls purse that could be turned inside out into a bassinet. I made clothes for the Kewpie doll and placed it in the purse, or turned the purse inside out and but the kewpie into the bassinet. Little ones loved them.
    • B.J. B B.J. B on Sep 29, 2013
@Dot M This sounds so cute. I don't know how to crochet but I know some friends who do.
  • Olga C Olga C on Sep 28, 2013
you need to put diapers on them with one big safety pin in the front and set them up on a crocheted doily. Then you can put a pot plant next to them so they look like they are having a picnic in a park!
  • Tamara Tamara on Sep 28, 2013
Put them on a baby shower gift as part of the gift wrap and dress them in an outfit that coordinates with the sex of the baby-to-be.

These are so cute, and they are hard to find now. I use to crochet cheerleaders outfits, the color of my girls school, and put coordinating pompoms on their hands. They were very cute & the kids loved them. Can also put a bow on the head. What a treasure to find!
    • B.J. B B.J. B on Sep 29, 2013
@Cheryl Ademino I really am going to have to learn how to crochet, this sound so cute!

Leave those cuties in the 'out' basket. It will make you smile every time you look at them!
    • B.J. B B.J. B on Sep 29, 2013
@Bonnie D You know, I think you are right. I do smile every time I look at them. I think they have found a home. They will have to share with my 'out' mail but they seem very agreeable.

I'd turn them into christmas elves so you get to see them during the holidays, then put away the rest of the year. They'd be really cute elves

I think it would be nice simply because they are too cute to just let lie, but if you think like I would, I"d not want to see them all year long either. It's why christmas elves would work for me. Glad you liked it

They are the cutest! Stage them in the basket as they are (or close) or add "accessories". Then take photos until you have one that is great for framing. For some reason, my first thought when I looked at your photo was how cute a photo would be, framed and displayed. Then you could enjoy them anywhere! A photo of them would be so cute in a child's bedroom or bath. It would also work in any room where nostalgia is part of the decor. Actually, the basket is part of the charm and lends the versatility to the display that allows so many options.

@B.J. B That would be the perfect place for the photos. Be sure to take photos as they are currently shown, then you could stage them with different accessories or pose them in other places for more photos. This sounds like a fun project where you can really stretch your creativity. When finished, pick your favorites for framing. (Wish I could be there to help with staging.) Please post photos once completed.

Paint them. Carefully! Give them clothes or unusual hair color. These are unusual. What yesterday was a fad today might be a collectors item.

There are young people who don't even know what a kewpie doll is. They are a valuable tool.
  • Karon Nelson Roberts Karon Nelson Roberts on Oct 01, 2013
Clean them up good and let teething babies chew on them. All five of my children teethed on these dolls. If you don't want to do that, then I agree with staging them around and snapping pictures for framing. I wish I still had my children's dolls with their teeth marks
  • Annette Blocker Annette Blocker on Oct 06, 2013
First, before I did anything to them I would date them to see if they were vintage or not. If they were I sould not touch them...leave them as they are. In fact, I kinda love how they are all hanging out in your basket looking out...I think it is rather a perfect place for them to be. That is how I do things...I leave them somewhere, even a painting hanging somewhere, and i look at it for a long while, then if it doesn't seem like the perfect place I lomove it or them to another place that I think is better or more appropriate and see how i feel about that for a while. Designing is a never finished job! Especially in my world!!!
    • B.J. B B.J. B on Oct 08, 2013
@Annette Blocker Thank you. I feel just like you do. I will have to do some research on them to see if I can figure out how old they are. I think my Mom might have had them since the 50s.
  • Annette Blocker Annette Blocker on Oct 06, 2013
OH, and if you ever decide you want to get rid of them give me a holler...I might just take them off of your hands!
  • Vicky fenton Vicky fenton on Oct 08, 2013
The little chalk ones I remember were brightly painted and sparkly, they must have had glitter on them. I loved those and batons with glittered ends! We went to the GA State fair every year:) Just the smell of autumn makes me think of candied apples and cotton candy:) ahhhh the good ole days! LOL
    • B.J. B B.J. B on Oct 08, 2013
@Tans Thanks for the memories Tans. Hard to believe that I can remember the 50s. I loved that time!!
  • They are so cute ones and you can make a whole show piece out of that. you may create a small meme or something interesting demo house for them and make it look more good. They are not good for kids so you may make there arrangements at some place where it's not reachable by them.
