I have my husband's uncle's army trunk. Unfortunately, some painted it before it was given to us. So, I repainted it and used it for a coffee table for a while. I would love to have received it without any paint in its original color. The original color is part of its charm. If you have any family who have served or are serving in our armed forces, use the trunk to display their pictures and create a patriotic area.
we use ours as a coffee table, and store our camping equipment in it. Double duty!
Use it end of bed for blankets. A friend of mine had a shelf in hers and used it to dispmay her dolls. Maybe use for wine bottles?

Have fun!
I keep Christmas ornaments in mine. I painted it semi-gloss black and use it as a coffee table in the den.
Decoupage your favorite keepsakes on the outside and use it to store the rest on the inside. Then have a piece of glass cut (with safety glass and rounded edges) to make either an end table or coffee table. This would be a great conversation piece.
I have seen these trunks used standing on end as shelves. Check it out:
